Kagona’s family deserves closure

THE family of businessman, Amos Kagona, who was reported to have shot himself dead in Borrowdale last week, deserves closure.

More than a week after the tragedy, Kagona, widely known as Chidhedhedhe, is still to be buried.

A post mortem, which is expected to help police investigations to establish the real cause of his death, was not done as scheduled on Monday.

The expectation was that once the post mortem was done, which would give police some clues as to what really happened that fateful day, the family would lay to rest their son, brother and father.

However, this was not done on Monday and the post mortem is now set for today.

Kagona was reported to have shot himself dead at the house of fellow businessman, Felix Munyaradzi, last Tuesday.

The tragedy came just hours before he was set to appear in court on US$3 million fraud charges.

Munyaradzi is the complainant in the case in which his company, Delatfin Civil Engineering, lost US$3 million in the fraudulent case.

Kagona’s accomplices — Jacob Muyambo and Saymore Mutakura — were convicted of the fraud just hours after the tragedy.

His grieving family members have been asking themselves a lot of questions even though Kagona left behind a note, which could help police with their investigations.

One of the questions haunting his family members is why did Kagona decide to walk, all the way from his home in Ashdown Park to Borrowdale West, to shoot himself there as has been widely reported in the media?

If he was suicidal that day, which some are saying can be gleaned from the notes he left behind, why didn’t he just kill himself at his house without having to walk such a long distance to end his life?

What message did he want to send by shooting himself dead at the home of the person who was the complainant in the case in which Kagona and his accomplices were found guilty by the court of committing a US$3 million fraud?

The good thing is that, among his friends, there is hope that the post mortem results will give them a good idea of what happened to Kagona on that fateful day.

“The good thing is that the police have already come out and said that they will pursue their investigations basing on what will come from the post mortem,” said one of his friends.

“We have our concerns as friends.”

Last week, national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said investigations were still in progress and confirmed that they were waiting for the results from both the post mortem and ballistics.

Our job is not to fight in the corner of those who are convicted by our justice system but we have a responsibility to shed some light to some complex cases, especially those that involve human life.

The court case has shown that Kagona, and his accomplices, defrauded Delatfin Civil Engineering but such is the value of life that none of them would have been sentenced to death.
