SUPERSPORT United coach Kaitano Tembo could become the first Zimbabwean to win a major trophy as a coach in the South African Premiership if his charges manage to beat Cape Town City and retain the MTN8 Cup final at Moses Mabhidha this afternoon.
The match kicks off at 5pm.
The two clubs meet in a repeat of last year’s final which SuperSport won 4-2 on penalties.
But then, Eric Tinkler was Matsatsantsa’s head coach, with Tembo deputising.
Tinkler parted ways with the club and Tembo was appointed the substantive gaffer for the Tshwane side.
The former Warriors vice captain has already endeared himself with the fans, having steered the ship to the MTN8 final and enjoying a fine start to the new season.
Only last Sunday, Tembo’s men posted an impressive 4-0 league win over Black Leopards which thrust them to just two points behind leaders Orlando Pirates.
Warriors striker Evans Rusike has also set the pace in the colours of SuperSport with four league goals and one in the cup, while the likes of Bradley Grobler and James Keene have also been providing crucial goals.
Tembo is relishing the challenge and yesterday expressed optimism his club will win the final.
He spoke glowingly of his players’ competitiveness and said he will have a positive selection headache ahead of the today’s match.
“To be honest I always enjoy a selection headache and I am very much encouraged by my players’ attitude. A lot of my players have proven to me that they are capable of delivering when given the chance,” said Tembo.
“The MTN8 final against Cape Town City is obviously going to be tough. They are a very good team with one of the best coaches on top.
