THE Kandege crazy has already sent a shift manager at a local bakery firm to jail where he is serving a 10-month jail term after his conviction for theft.
William Gonese, 28, was a shift manager at Baker’s Inn. He was initially sentenced to two-and-half years in prison.
Twelve months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Another 10 months were suspended on condition he pays back his employer the US$3 420 he stole from his employer.
Gonese told the court he stole the money from his employer to fund online betting where he was trying his luck on Kandege.
He also said he wanted to impress his new bride.
He took a gamble during a night shift in the Harare CBD and gambled the US$3 420 from his workplace.
Gonese, of Unit M, Seke, in Chitungwiza, pleaded guilty to theft before Harare Magistrate Lynne Chinzou and was duly convicted.
Gonese told the court:
“Your Worship, my intention was not to steal, but to win more money. I started betting with US$350, and as I kept trying my luck, I ended up spending all the US$3 420.
“My girlfriend recently eloped to me, and I wanted to impress her if I had won the money,” he said. Prosecutor Audrah Chitoro said Gonese was entrusted with a float of US$3 420 to serve customers at a Bakers Inn outlet along Chinhoyi Street in Harare.
However, by the next day at around 3:08am, Gonese called Simbisa Bakers Inn audit manager Mr Yusufu Bruce and confessed that he had lost US$470 in cash and US$2 950 in InnBucks deposits through online betting.
Mr Bruce conducted a reconciliation at the shop, which confirmed the full amount of US$3 420 had been misappropriated.
Nothing was recovered and Gonese was arrested.
