Kapini relegated to the bench

FORMER Highlanders goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini has been relegated to the bench at South African Premiership side AmaZulu. The development coincided with the taking over of Wilfred Mugeyi as acting coach at the club replacing Criag Rosslee who was fired after a string of poor results. AmaZulu had proved porous with Kapini in between the goalposts.

He has since been replaced by Aubrey Mathibe who despite being on the losing end has shown some flashes of brilliance.
Kapini was signed from Rustenburg-based side Platinum Stars three seasons ago. He is yet to win silverware with the side.

“At the moment Mathibe is doing a great job for the team and we can’t substitute someone who’s performing well. Kapini is more experienced but we decided to rope in a youngster even though the team is struggling.

“Since I took over the reigns from Craig Rosslee I’ve won once in the Telkom Knockout Cup last 16 beating Bloemfontein Celtic 3-2 but I believe there’s still room for improvement,” Mugeyi said.

He added: “After their (players) loss to Mamelodi Sundowns 1-2 after extra-time on Saturday night in the Telkom quarter-finals it was so painful as they wanted to also do better in the tournament but now their focus is on the league games where they need to start winning games and move away from the relegation zone.”
