MDC-T national chairperson Lovemore Moyo’s driver, Vumani Mahlangu, has died. Mahlangu died at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) on Sunday morning from injuries sustained in an accident in Chivhu two weeks ago, the opposition party confirmed yesterday. He was travelling with Moyo, his aide Artwell Sibanda and party activist Mellissa Mabeza when the Mazda BT50 vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a head on collision with a truck on their way to Bulawayo from Harare.
All four suffered serious injuries and were admitted to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).
MDC-T spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora said Mahlangu’s death was a sad development.
“We received the news that he (Mahlangu) died yesterday. It is a sad development. I don’t have much details though, contact Thabitha Khumalo,” said Mwonzora.
Khumalo said Mahlangu died at the UBH’s Intensive Care Unit.
“He was in the Intensive Care Unit since the day of the accident. Burial arrangements have not been made yet as some members of Mahlangu’s family are still being told about his death,” she said.
Khumalo said Moyo, Sibanda, and Mabeza were all discharged from hospital on Saturday.
MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai last week visited Moyo in hospital and reportedly spent an hour there.
MDC secretary-general Priscilla Misihairabwi- Mushonga, who was involved in an accident a day before Moyo and others, is recovering from home after being discharged from Mater Dei Hospital last week.
A jeep Cherokee that Misihairabwi-Mushonga was travelling in hit a cow 60 kilometres before Bulawayo while coming from Harare.
Party spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube, prominent Bulawayo lawyer Sindiso Mazibisa and a driver escaped with minor injuries while Misihairabwi-Mushonga is reported to have suffered three broken ribs among other injuries.
“She (Misihairabwi-Mushonga) is being attended to from her home, the doctors are still assessing her with a view of performing certain procedures,” said Dube.
