Karate Championships dates confirmed

THE dates for the annual Kwekwe National Invitational Karate Championships have been confirmed and the event will be held on July 27 and 28 at Queens Sports Club in Kwekwe.

The tournament, organised by Sensei Shepherd Ziwira, is marking its 14th edition and will see Zimbabwe’s representative at the Africa games, Tanyaradzwa Ziwira of Kwekwe, out to defend his title.

However, he will have to contend with his brother Aiden, Lucky Dube, and Marlon Bhebhe.

Rumbidzwai Chiunda will also be on the line-up together with Bulawayo representatives Sidumiso Bhebhe, Shayne Manyathela, and Ashley Long. Harare will have Monica Peters, Trinity Kotsi, Tinaye Chikamhi, Adolf Chapwanira, Tinashe Mambodza, and Rufaro Matanhire among several other top fighters.

Ziwira said they felt honoured to be hosting another top karate tournament . It will be used to pay tribute to late top karateka Sensei Wasi Musa Chinunga, who passed away early this month.

“We are pleased and honoured to announce that the annual Kwekwe National Invitational Karate Championships 2024 dates are set for July 27 and 28 at Queens Sports Club.

“We are committed to making this event a successful one through adherence to the highest standards of preparations to create an ideal atmosphere for all participating teams and individuals.

“We have already started bringing together all the necessary things like trophies and certificates for the winners,” said Ziwira.

The tournament, dubbed “Best of the Best,” is hosted by Ziwira, who is the Japan Karate Association of Zimbabwe chief instructor and Midlands Karate Union technical director.

Several athletes from across the country always grace the event, which is also used to select the country’s representatives in some international competitions.

Top karatekas are expected to battle it out in the senior male categories, junior boys, and junior girls categories.
