Workers’ union secretary-general, Mr Benard Dhanda, said council owed employees more than US$8 000 in bereavement subscriptions. He said the workers’ union held a meeting in June last year in which council agreed to pay its workers consistently.
During the same meeting, which was brokered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Dhanda said council agreed to pay the workers timeously.
“Workers last got paid in October last year,” he said. “How do you think people can survive for such a long time without pay?
“Despite council having committed itself to paying its workers at the end of every month or four days later, it has failed to keep up to its promise. Workers are demanding their salary arrears including bonus for last year.
“There are a lot of irregularities taking place within the council. The local authority last year got the green light from Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Cde Ignatius Chombo to create in fill residential stands so that it could raise cash to pay its workers.
The bulk of the residential stands were allegedly grabbed by councillors for a song most of whom later sold them.
