Katy Perry has denied rumours that she is plotting a revenge song against Taylor Swift, whose hit “Bad Blood” is allegedly to be about their rivalry.
It was claimed that the 30-year-old had registered the song title ‘‘1984’’ with music publishers BMI, however the star’s representative insists this is not the case.
‘‘Katy Perry’s managers at Direct Management Group confirm that this story is completely false,’’ the rep told Billboard on Tuesday. ‘‘Katy Perry was not involved in writing, singing, recording or registering this song.’’
Katy also posted a link to the Billboard article on her Twitter page.
BMI confirmed the song title was registered back in September, and the ‘‘I Kissed A Girl’’ hit-maker’s name can still be seen listed under ‘‘artistes’’ on the page.
However, one of the supposed writers on the track, Patrick Collier, also denied the song was happening as he posted a screenshot of the listing on Instagram with the caption ‘‘news to me’’.
It was first reported on Monday by BreatheHeavy.com that Katy had registered the song.
And while the pop star may not be working on a song as a dig at Taylor, the 25-year-old’s latest single is still very much rumoured to be about her.
Taylor’s track ‘‘Bad Blood’’ is about falling out with someone she thought was a friend, and she explained the story behind it during an interview with Rolling Stone last year.
‘‘For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,’’ the country star turned pop star revealed. ‘‘She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, “Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?”
‘‘Then last year, the other star crossed a line. She did something so horrible, I was like, “Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.” And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.’
Taylor, who said that she is ‘‘surprisingly non-confrontational’’, then admitted that there may be a ‘‘personal’’ aspect to the rivalry, but added: ‘‘But I don’t think there would be any personal problem if she weren’t competitive.’’
One ‘‘personal problem’’ the pair could have is that Katy is currently dating John Mayer, who was previously in a relationship with Taylor — she even penned the break-up ballad Dear John about their time together.
It didn’t take the internet long to suggest that Katy was the star Taylor was talking about in the interview, and the Birthday hit-maker only added fuel to the rumours when she tweeted the following day: ‘‘Beware the Regina George in sheep’s clothing.’’
It was found that in 2013 a backup dancer who performed on Katy’s 2011 tour had revealed to The Examiner that he — and two others — had been hired by Taylor for her Red tour, which ran from March 2013 to June 2014.
But halfway through Katy offered them spots on her Prism tour (which kicked off in May 2014) and they decided to sitch over, leaving Taylor’s camp prematurely.
Katy has since described Taylor in an interview with Elle as the ‘‘media’s sweetheart’’, while Taylor said to The Telegraph that she is ‘‘never going to talk about [Katy]’’ to the Press. — Daily Mail
