MBUYA Nehanda Maternity Ward at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is now matching world-class standards after undergoing extensive refurbishment under the Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme, which is expected to improve maternal healthcare and outcomes.

This emerged at a monitoring and evaluation tour led by Prevail Group of Companies, where Government delegates were taken through the modernised facilities.

The refurbishment highlights the partnership between the Ministry of Health and Child Care and private contractors in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in line with the country’s Vision 2030 aspirations.

Speaking on the sidelines of the tour, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals Clinical Director and Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Tonderai Innocent Mangwiro said the refurbishment had expanded the hospital’s critical care capacity.

He said the upgraded facilities would enhance maternal health outcomes by providing health workers with improved infrastructure and equipment to deliver quality care.

“We are very glad that the work is progressing very well, and thanks to the team that came for monitoring and evaluation to see how things are going,” he said.

“Mbuya Nehanda is an important maternity hospital in this city: 265 bed capacity, 14 000 deliveries, 40 percent of them by cesarean section,” he said.

He said the refurbishment has expanded theatre and high‑dependence unit capacity, equipping staff with new resources to deliver better care and improve patient outcomes

“This refurbishment has increased our theatre capacity and our high‑dependence unit, where very sick women are treated,” said Dr Magwiro.

“We believe these enhancements and additional equipment will help our staff to work better and improve the outcomes in terms of our patients who come through.”

By the end of September, building equipment and elevators are expected to be installed, while Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals continues to benefit from a monthly donation of 1 500 hampers valued at US$27 000 from Prevail Group of Companies.

In this regard, Prevail Group of Companies CEO Ms Tendai Sithole said that modernisation works represent a game‑changing initiative in Zimbabwe’s medical sector.

She indicated that the hospital now boasts of advanced systems and redesigned wards, improving patient care.

“We are very proud to be part of such a game‑changer in the medical fraternity across the country,” she said.

“We have managed to modernise Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital with facilities such as a state‑of‑the‑art HVAC system, which is a very high‑spec air conditioning system that is going to allow different temperatures within the same wards.”

Ms Sithole said the refurbishment has modernised flooring and redesigned wards to meet contemporary standards.

“Prevail Group is proud to be part of such an impressive and life‑changing initiative that is spearheaded by our President, His Excellency Dr Mnangagwa,” she said.

“We have also modernised the flooring and partitioned some of the wards to suit modern‑day designs, and also to be able to accommodate more patients.”
