THE matter in which former Zanu-PF provincial chairperson for Mashonaland East, Ray Kaukonde, is suing Zimpapers for $5 million for defamation, has been referred to trial after the parties failed to reach a settlement in a pre-trial conference.Justice Charles Hungwe on Wednesday heard the parties in the pre-trial conference and resolved to take the case for trial and the matter is yet to be set down for hearing.

Kaukonde in January issued defamation summons over a series of newspaper articles published by The Sunday Mail and Sunday News in November last year alleging that he sexually abused some female party members.

Zimpapers denied that the articles were defamatory and maintained that they had a moral duty to inform the public on anything concerning aspiring public office bearers.
