KEEP IT A WOMEN’S AFFAIR

IN today’s edition of your favourite newspaper we have reported that some men have vowed to break with tradition and gatecrash the party by attending the Doek & Slay all-women party when the record-breaking show rolls into Harare again on April 13.

The organisers have also vowed that the grand parties, which have become a hit with women, will remain exclusive for women and there will be strict security at the new show in Harare.

We have reported how social media exploded over the weekend after the organisers announced the artists who will perform at the first edition of Doek & Slay to be held in Harare this year.

There will be performances from Intotal Band, Feli Nandi, Winky D and Iyasa on April 13.

However, a number of men, who were commenting online after the announcement of the line-up of artists, vowed that they will break with tradition and attend the show.

But, the organisers have said the event remains strictly for women only and they are going to make sure that no man will be allowed to enter the show.

They also addressed the issue of why male artists continue to dominate their shows.

Feli Nandi will be the only female artist for the show in Harare.

The organisers said they will always stand by their concept that the party is for ladies only and no man will be allowed to enter.

They said Doek & Slay was created as a safe space for the ladies and that is why it is only held on Sundays.

The Doek & Slay party has become the biggest show, in terms of attendance, on the local entertainment scene.

The Harare edition is always the prime show, attracting women from all over the country, and the last one to be held in the capital attracted a record-breaking crowd of over 23 000. We agree with the organisers that there is no need for them to change their rules and bring men into these parties.

If they do that, then it will be the end of their product.

It has found appeal because women found a way that they can enjoy themselves, in each other’s company, without the presence of men.

Despite the huge numbers which are now attending these shows, we have seen that violence is never part of these events, which would have been different if there was a mixture of men and women.

A lot of alcohol is consumed at these parties but, to their credit, the women have behaved very well and violence is not part of these shows.

We have seen smaller shows, where there is a combination of men and women, and we have seen all the violence which has unfolded at such events.

We are not saying that men are violent but we have seen that we have a small but violent clique of men which, once they consume alcohol, appear to lose their senses.

Why change a successful concept?
