According to these theologians, this angel could produce different acoustic sounds with his voice, which blended well as if they came from different musical instruments as he glorified God.
The Bible in the book of Ezekiel mentions that this angelic being had great authority in Heaven as a covering cherub, and being so close to God coupled with his angelic beauty and vocal abilities gained himself a lot admiration among the angels of God who thronged around him.
At least these are some of the characteristics of this angel of light before his downfall. In other verses we read how this angel who first introduced sin into this world lost his position in Heaven due to his pride.
The story of Lucifer’s downfall is important when we look at the subject of gospel music and how some gospel artistes may sometimes lose sight of their calling as a result of pride and the love of praise or recognition.
While it is common knowledge that Satan uses both secular musicians and gospel artistes alike to control the world, it is also important to note how some gospel artistes in particular can be misdirected by the devil owing to praise that they receive from their multitude of fans.
Although gospel artistes are needed in the Christian faith it, however, appears that apart from receiving praise from their fans some artistes sometimes fail to stick to their biblical principles owing material gains and money which come their way as a result of their music.
This usually results in pride, a character defect that is more synonymous with one being worldly than God fearing. In other cases, a musician’s vocal abilities can be his or her distinguishing mark which attracts more praise and admiration from his or her fans while little mention is made of God who blesses people with such vocal
talents and abilities.
In Zimbabwe there are many gospel artistes whose works have landed them accolades on many occasions both locally and abroad.
Notable artistes and groups include the multi-award winning choral group Chitungwiza Harmony Singers which recently scooped an award in Polokwane, South Africa. Others include Prince “Mwana Wamambo” Mafukidze, who won the Africa Gospel Award that was held recently in London. On the local music scene we have artistes such as Blessing Shumba who are topping the local music charts such as Charlie Kambudzi and Kudzi Nyakudya.
While these artistes are doing a commendable job of praising God through music one point remains important to them, which is the need to be humble Christians who live to glorify God.
Having said this, pride which follows many gospel artistes across the world need to be resisted through prayer and by redirecting praise back to God who blesses people with the gifts they have.
