and reporter Nqaba Matshazi for possessing stolen data and publishing a “defamatory” story.
The medical aid society, led by Dr Munyaradzi Kereke, is also following a parallel civil case demanding US$2,5 million compensation for the story published in the Standard edition on November 6, 2011.
The story under the headline “Kereke’s Medical Aid Firm Collapses?” claimed that Green Card was facing serious financial challenges and was making only US$50 per day.
The medical aid society’s management however, laughed off the story as “malicious falsehoods” saying the story quoted Green Card membership as US$2 000, translating into monthly premium income of more than US$100 000 and not the alleged daily US$50.
According to an affidavit by Dr Kereke, two reports have been made to the police under IR 110416 and IR 110417.
The report was made on November 5, 2011 at Harare Central Police Station.
Data which Dr Kereke says was stolen included claims reports, financial statements and membership registry.
In the affidavit, Dr Kereke stated that he had directly supplied the Standard newspaper with true facts on the standing of the medical aid society, over and above the data they held in their custody. Green Card Medical Aid Society has also launched a formal complaint with the Zimbabwe Media Commission.
