Kids like us

Charmaine Mutukwa

Parents apart,

Growing up with relatives,

It’s never easy for kids like us.

To fathom reject and acceptance,

Appreciation and depression,

Crying behind closed doors,

Smiling at fantasies,

Of a two-parent household.

Something that will never happen

Wishing our parents would scold us

Comfort us, embrace us.

It’s never easy for kids like us,

To smile everyday and pretend we ere alright, whilst dying inside.

It’s never easy,

To mingle with other kids,

Who talk about how amazing they’re parents are,

Kids who talk about what dad bought for them,

Kids who talk about family time,

Something we’re not aware.

It’s never easy for kids like us to laugh with our blended ‘families’

When all we think about is worthlessness,

It’s never easy for kids like us.

To open up, when no one tries to listen.

It’s never easy for kids like us.

Daddy issues, drugs, depression.

You won’t hear the end of it,

It’s never easy.
