DANCEHALL crooner, Shadreck Kwarire, popularly known in the music circles as King Shaddy, has revealed that last Friday’s show at Gulliver’s was his worst ever show since joining the showbiz industry more than a decade ago. The dreadlocked musician left Mutare for Kwekwe where he was scheduled to perform the following day a dejected man saying the poor attendance was first of its kind.
This was the nightclub’s first high profile show since its resuscitation a month ago. Less than fifty people paid to see the Makorokoza Family leader performing. The Weekender learnt that posters for the show were put late Wednesday afternoon, hardly two days before the show and that could have contributed immensely to the monumental flop.
So disappointing was the turnout that some patrons had to resort to their usual drinking stupor while listening to resident DJs music after Kwarire disappeared around 3 am to Kwekwe.
King Shaddy told The Weekender that he had no option but to perform before the paltry crowd for professional reasons. “There is nothing I could do. I had to perform. We understand this is a new bar which is slowly gaining ground. We hope to come back in Mutare and perform before a better crowd,” he said.
He said he was working on a new album as well as singles expected to be released before end of this year. Besides the flop, the Harare-based musician belted out a string of yesteryear hits such as Amai Huni. One fan identified as Leon, laid blame on the show organisers for poorly marketing the show.
