Klopp deal on the cards

LONDON. — Liverpool hope to appoint Jurgen Klopp as their new manager by the end of the week after he expressed a willingness to return to management and oversee the club’s revival.

Liverpool were yesterday expected to hold a transatlantic board meeting via videophone as they look to tie up the appointment of Klopp on a three-year deal.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager is Liverpool’s No. 1 choice to succeed the sacked Brendan Rodgers, though Carlo Ancelotti remains in the picture.

Liverpool have already met Klopp on more than one occasion and are aware the 48-year-old has reservations about the way players are recruited by Anfield’s infamous transfer committee.

Top-level talks between the Anfield hierarchy and the former Borussia Dortmund coach and his representatives will continue in the coming days as Liverpool look to close a deal for Rodgers’ successor.

Rodgers was sacked on Sunday with Liverpool in 10th place, but just three points from fourth in the Premier League, and last night he released a statement in which he said he was “incredibly disappointed” to have left.

Klopp (48) has been on sabbatical since leaving Dortmund at the end of last season after seven years, but has indicated a desire to join Liverpool with a three-year contract having been mooted. — The Daily Express.
