THE greatest inventions, exploits and discoveries came to be because people who accomplished them were knowledgeable with relevant useful information in that particular domain. There is the misconception that knowledge is power when actually the use of knowledge is power if applied correctly.
Knowledge is simply acquiring information.
One cannot forget the cartoon GI Joe’s classical statement, “knowing is half the battle”, a self-explanatory statement meaning when you know something, the battle is half won.
However, one’s victory is made complete by applying the knowledge they acquired to practice. Children’s book writer Fadzi Chitakunye said one’s ability or skill to do something is of no benefit if one lacks knowledge about the gift or how to apply it.
“As a children’s book writer, I had to acquire the right knowledge to use appropriate language, content, colours and style suitable for kids,” she said.
What has made the humans to develop into the most civilised dominate species on planet earth is our ability to apply the knowledge and information we acquire. Our greatest tool and most powerful weapon is the mind that is able to store and apply information.
Former Bulawayo Polytechnic Students’ Representative Council president Itai Makuve (25) said it is imperative to apply what one knows to one’s advantage.
“In my experiences, I have learnt that when you lack knowledge you make foolish choices that will haunt you in the future.
“Applying the knowledge I acquired in every given problem or challenge that presented itself allowed me to release the potential I had to excel in many things,” he said.
Youths should not lose their minds to drugs but use their minds to rise.
Ignorance begets dire consequences and catastrophic results because a person who lacks knowledge is bound to make foolish decisions that negatively impact his/her career.
Young people must be knowledgeable about outcomes, consequences and effects of decisions they make on a daily basis.
Evans Maphosa (24) said a person who does not apply knowledge acquired is foolish.
“It is disheartening that some youths who know very well that not abstaining from sex could result in them contracting HIV/Aids, STIs or unwanted teenage pregnancies still indulge in the act.
“Applying the right knowledge we acquired in our families, schools, churches and social platform actually preserve our physical, spiritual and psychological health,” he said.
Some teenage girls who abuse alcohol may know they are putting themselves in a comprising position which is likely to result in a teenage pregnancy.
Experience is not just the best teacher but the most painful one.
A generation that puts into practice the right knowledge they acquire makes positive difference. It pays to apply the knowledge one acquires on a day-to-day basis.
