Kohli humbles Proteas

PRETORIA. — Another magnificent century – his third in the series and 35th overall – by run-machine Virat Kohli enabled India to cruise to an eight-wicket victory against a humiliated South Africa in the sixth and final Momentum ODI at SuperSport Park in Centurion last night.

The result meant that India crushed the home team 5-1 in the series with a succession of lop-sided victories that represented a baptism of fire for temporary Proteas’ skipper Aiden Markram.

But it wasn’t the result of the match or even the series that mattered yesterday, but rather the imperious performance of India’s intense skipper.

In all, Kohli struck 19 fours and two sixes in his scintillating unbeaten 129 that took only 96 balls.
His century, which came with a powerful straight drive off Imran Tahir, included 17 fours in just 82 balls.

In the process, Kohli established a world record, compiling a total of 558 runs at a mind-boggling average of 184.33 in a six-match ODI series, a remarkable achievement, beating his teammate Rohit Sharma’s mark of 491 against Australia in 2013/14. — MWP
