A HARARE commuter omnibus driver and his conductor have appeared in court on allegations of kidnapping a female traffic police officer who was on duty in the CBD before stealing her US$396.
Anywork Simbe (30) and Brighton Nyamukanda (30) appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo, who remanded them in custody to Friday for bail application.
The court heard that the complainant saw a commuter omnibus which was being driven by Simbe picking up passengers at an undesignated point at the corner of Robert Mugabe Road and Julius Nyerere Street, Harare.
It is alleged that the accused persons were soliciting for passengers. The complainant then went to the motor vehicle and boarded it while her colleague, Cst Dzvaka was following.
The court heard that the complainant told the accused persons that the motor vehicle was under arrest for picking up passengers at an undesignated point.
Simbe immediately took off and turned left into Angwa Street. The court heard that Simbe drove into Nelson Mandela Avenue and turned into Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Road and finally stopped near the Highlands shops.
They then threw the complainant out of their vehicle after stealing her wallet containing US$396, her national identification document, bank card, and Jet card before they sped off.
The complainant was then picked up by another police officer who was passing by. The total value stolen is US$396 and nothing was recovered.
