A Harare commuter omnibus driver has been sentenced to an effective two-year jail term after a passenger he allowed to hang onto the rear of his vehicle fell to his death.
Nyasha Muteweye (33) was convicted of culpable homicide by Mbare Magistrate, Mr Tinashe Ndokera.
In addition to the custodial sentence, Muteweye was banned from driving Class 2 vehicles for two years. His driver’s licence was also cancelled.
The State proved that Muteweye acted negligently on February 5, 2026, at around midnight as he was driving a Toyota Hiace along Simon Mazorodze Road on his way to Waterfalls.
The court heard that the now-deceased Bernard Taurai Genti was allowed by Muteweye to hang onto the back of the speeding vehicle.
Upon reaching the Chinzou roundabout, Muteweye failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to swerve.
As a result, Genti lost his grip, fell from the moving kombi and sustained serious injuries.
He was rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he was admitted. However, he succumbed to the injuries five days later.
Prosecutor Ms Vimbai Makamure told the court that Muteweye was negligent.
