SOUTH Korea has pledged its support for Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, marking a significant diplomatic endorsement.

The announcement was made by South Korea’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jae Kyung Park, who highlighted a “positive, strong, upward trajectory” in bilateral relations. Ambassador Park attributed this growing partnership to sustained high-level engagement.

“Since last year, continued bilateral exchange visits, and also at diplomatic level, strengthened mutual trust. We are pleased to support the candidature by Zimbabwe for the UNSC,” he stated.

This diplomatic support coincides with a notable surge in trade and people-to-people exchanges after years of relative dormancy.

After three decades of bilateral trade hovering between US$30 million and US$40 million, it has already reached a record US$48 million as of October 2025.

Officials project it will exceed US$50 million by year-end—another first.

People-to-people links are also expanding rapidly.

Travel from Zimbabwe to South Korea is expected to reach about 600 individuals by the end of 2024, up from 300 in 2023.

Conversely, visits from South Korea to Zimbabwe are projected to top 20 000 this year, a significant increase from 13 000 in 2024 and 8 000 the year before.
