Kudos for ladies rugby team

FOLLOWING their splendid performances at the Africa Cup pre-qualifiers, which saw them secure a ticket to the Africa Women’s Cup finals, the victorious Zimbabwe women’s rugby sevens team has won the admiration of both Zimbabwe Rugby Union and the fans.

The Lady Cheetahs steamrolled past their opponents in Maseru, Lesotho over the weekend after winning all their four games without conceding a try.

They battered the hosts 62-0, and pummelled both Namibia and Botswana by an identical 39-0 before getting the better of Mauritius 20-0.

This sets them up for a date with the likes of South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar, Senegal, Ghana and Uganda at the Africa Sevens Cup scheduled for April in Tunisia.

The African qualifiers provide a platform for qualification to the Rugby World Cup set for Cape Town, South Africa in September and the Commonwealth Games.

ZRU chief executive, Sifiso Made said the senior women’s national rugby sevens team made the most of their pre-tournament preparations since the end of last year to emerge victorious in Lesotho.

“The reason we were victorious is that we did not break camp during the festive season. In fact, the team was active since playing at the Kenya Sevens in October and they have been training,” said Made.

He said the side will continue competing against other teams outside the country in order to fine tune for upcoming tournaments.
