A ZIMUNYA woman has dragged her estranged boyfriend to Mutare Civil Court demanding $50 000 for the upkeep of their child.

Nyaradzo Maradza justified her demands by claiming that her ex-boyfriend, David Karota earns a lot of money from farming and smuggling yet he was neglecting the minor.

Mutare magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato presided over the case.

“I want $50 000 for the welfare of our nine-year-old child. This man realises around US$700 a week, yet he is now prioritising only children from his first marriage and neglecting our son. I earn $13 000 and that is not enough to take care of the child,” she said.

Dismissing his ex-girlfriend’s claims that he earns that much, Karota offered $1 000 as maintenance.

“I can afford $1 000 because I do not earn a lot from farming. She has five other children and wants them to survive on the money she is claiming from me,” he urged.

Karota improved his offer to $7 000, saying he had five other children and relatives to look after.

However, Mr Chipato ordered him to pay $8 500.
