Kwekwe City Council has brokered a deal with Southern Region Division One outfit, Sable FC in a deal that has seen the team being renamed Kwekwe Sables Football Club.
In a statement, a Kwekwe City Council official said talks were at an advanced stage and major modalities had already been done for the merger.
Kwekwe City assistant housing director Edson Chiyangwa confirmed the reports saying they would, however, look for a sponsor for the team.
a?We have already gone over the major modalities and what is now left are minor ones like change of name and other minor issues,a? said Chiyangwa.
Kenneth Chembe, who was Sable FC coach, has since left the club and has been replaced by a council employee Muzondiwa Kachingwe.
Rueben Phiri, who was the assistant coach, has joined another Division One outfit, Ivan Hore as assistant coach.
The takeover follows the ceasing of operations at the giant fertiliser manufacturer which led to the laying off of most employees.
The latest developments were, however, met with mixed feelings amid reports that the troubled council employees had gone for almost three months without salaries.
a?Sable will provide us with their bus and other things they can give as we continue with our bid to search for a major sponsor,a? said Chiyangwa.
