KWEKWE City Council has completed three model houses as part of its larger housing development plans.
The Second Republic last year launched the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which is pushing to attain an upper middle income economy by 2030, with housing delivery as one of the major clusters.
The city council has used part of its devolution funds availed by Government to build new modern houses in Mbizo 7, demolishing old and delapited ones.
Speaking during the commissioning and handover of the three model houses on Friday, Kwekwe District Development Coordinator Mr Fortune Mpungu, who was the guest of honour, said the local authority was implementing Government’s development agenda.
“The three houses were constructed using devolution funds in a bid to provide descent and affordable accommodation for this community and this should be the focus and the way to go,” he said.
“The Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa has a vision to turn the country into an upper middle income economy by the year 2030 and this can only be a reality if local authorities play their part and build such housing units as the ones we are commissioning today.”
Mr Mpungu said housing delivery was one of the major clusters under NDS1, with the county aiming at delivering 220 000 housing units by 2025.
“The strategy under the housing thematic area is to ensure that 10 000 hectares for housing delivery is availed and this is the duty of every local authority,” he said.
One of the female beneficiaries under the new housing programme, Ms Sithanike Dube, said she was happy that she was no longer living in squalid conditions in an old one-roomed council house.
“This is very good, even when paying rentals its now worthy it,” she said.
“We have been living under unhealthy conditions in these old houses and I think this should be the new norm, building new modern houses for us the residents.”
