KWEKWE City Council is carrying out a massive clean-up and road signs branding exercise in the Central Business District and its suburbs after heavy rainfall this season left most of the city’s drainages blocked and road signs defaced.
In an interview last week, the city’s town clerk Mr Emmanuel Musara said the city was in a bad state, with grass protruding everywhere, hence the decision to embark on the clean-up exercise, which involves grass cutting.
“It’s a massive clean-up campaign we are embarking on after the rains left some of our drain system blocked, so we are clearing our drains and collecting all the refuse that has piled up,” he said.
“As you know, Kwekwe is one of the cleanest cities in the country and we want to maintain that status.”
Mr Musara said the clean-up campaign would be extended to the suburbs as the local authority sought to avert disease outbreaks.
He said there were teams going around the city clearing drainages, while others were cutting grass along the city roads.
Mr Musara said the local authority had set aside a significant sum of money towards branding the road signs and markings which were defaced by the rains.
“We are also branding roads and replacing some road signs and markings which were destroyed by heavy rains,” he said.
Mr Musara said the local authority had started floating tenders in search for contractors for the rehabilitation of roads.
Kwekwe City was recently allocated $1 million by Zinara for roads maintenance.
Mr Musara said the council would soon embark on road rehabilitation exercise.
“We have floated tenders and soon we will have identified the contractor to work with in the rehabilitation exercise,” he said.
“Our road network is in very bad state and needs urgent attention.
“We are happy that the money allocated to us will take us somewhere in as far as the rehabilitation of our roads network is concerned.”
