Kwekwe relishes Premiership dream

Ever since the relegation of Lancashire Steel Football Club back in 2008, the City of Kwekwe has yet to taste any Premiership football action.

And 15 years on, calls for the return of Premiership football to the mining town have grown louder with each passing year.

Kwekwe seems to have a rich football history after having produced great local talents like the late Paul Gundani, Luke Petros Jukulile, Norman Komani, Petros Sibanda, Malvern Nyakabangwe, Stephen Alimenda, Washington Arubi and Tafadzwa Dube.

Phil Makekera, the benefactor of the Kwekwe United football project, believes the mining town has what it takes to turn around fortunes and return to the Premier-ship.

“I believe so much in this project and the potential to achieve more,” said Makekera.

“Kwekwe has produced some of the best players in the country, and I feel there’s no better place to invest and spearhead the return of premiership football in Kwe-kwe,” he said.

The Kwekwe United project dates back to 2017, and Makekera set a five-year plan for the team to gain promotion to the top flight.

However, this plan hit a snag when the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

Now, as they eye promotion into the top flight next season, Makekera also wants Kwekwe to retain its status as being a conveyor belt of players.

“Our goal is to see the return of premiership football back in Kwekwe by the end of next season,” he said.

“I’m driven by passion for football and also the unfulfilled dream of bringing top-flight football back to the city.

“I never played football at the highest level, so I want to help these youngsters to fulfil their football dreams by providing a safe environment to excel,” said Makekera.

With Kwekwe now playing second-fiddle to surrounding Midlands towns and cities, Makekera has rallied all stakeholders to join hands and work together.

“I personally appeal to the people of Kwekwe, Radcliffe, and all areas surrounding the town to support the team.

“This is the team for the community of Kwekwe.
