LADY CHEVRONS IN HEAVY DEFEAT

IT was always going to be tough for Zimbabwe Women against World Cup-bound Pakistan in the first of three ODIs at National Bank Stadium in Karachi yesterday.

A brilliant 98 from Sadaf Shamas powered Pakistan Women to a commanding 168-run win over the Lady Chevrons, after the hosts posted a strong total of 330/5.

Chasing 331, Zimbabwe Women got off to a slow start and lost wickets at key intervals.

Beloved Biza scored a commendable half-century but lacked support as the rest of the batting line-up faltered.

Pakistan’s bowlers maintained control throughout, bowling Zimbabwe out for 162 in 36.4 overs to seal a comprehensive victory in the series opener.

Pakistan Women’s innings was built on a structured approach, starting with a controlled powerplay and transitioning into sustained partnerships through the middle overs.

Sadaf Shamas played the anchor role perfectly, pacing her innings while forming key stands.

Gull Feroza’s support at the top ensured stability, while the later overs saw aggressive intent from Sidra Ameen and Najiha Alvi.

The innings was anchored by Shamas, who built crucial partnerships, including a solid opening stand with Gull Feroza.

Contributions from Sidra Ameen and a rapid half-century from Najiha Alvi helped Pakistan accelerate in the closing overs.

Their acceleration in the death overs significantly boosted the total, making it a daunting chase.

Zimbabwe Women’s reply lacked consistency.

Despite a promising effort from Biza, the side struggled against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Frequent wickets disrupted momentum, and the required rate climbed quickly beyond reach.

Pakistan are using the series as part of their preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup set for England and Wales from June 12 to July 5 while Zimbabwe are building a team that must be able to compeete against elite opponents. — Zimapers Sports Hub/ cricketworld.com
