THE Zimbabwe women’s cricket team endured a chastening afternoon in Dunedin as Amelia Kerr’s all-round brilliance powered New Zealand to a crushing 200-run victory in the third One Day International, completing a 3-0 series whitewash yesterday.
According to reports from Dunedin, the hosts elected to bat first, piling up 303 for six with Kerr’s composed 80 anchoring the innings.
Maddy Green’s fluent 94 and Brooke Halliday’s 40 added further weight, while Isabella Gaze’s late cameo ensured the White Ferns crossed the 300-mark.
Christabel Chatonzwa was Zimbabwe’s most effective bowler, returning two for 48 but she found little support from her teammates.
In reply, Zimbabwe faltered badly, dismissed for just 103 in 27.1 overs. Loreen Tshuma briefly resisted with a fighting 34 but the rest of the batting line-up collapsed under relentless pressure.
Rosemary Mair and Nensi Patel chipped in with early strikes before Kerr tore through the lower order, claiming 5 for 22 in just 3.1 overs. Her spell included a stunning hat-trick, removing Audrey Mazvishaya, Tendai Makusha and Nomvelo Sibanda in quick succession.
For Zimbabwe, the defeat highlighted familiar struggles, lack of depth in batting, difficulty sustaining partnerships, and an inability to counter world-class spin.
The gulf in quality was stark, with Kerr’s dominance underscoring the challenge Zimbabwe face in bridging the gap to top-tier opposition.
Kerr, captaining New Zealand for the first time in a white-ball series, finished with 140 runs and 16 wickets across the three matches, capping a Player of the Series performance that left Zimbabwe reeling.
Zimbabwe were missing the services of Kelis Ndlovu after suffering a concussion in the second ODI.
The series marks Zimbabwe Women’s first appearance in the ICC Women’s Championship, which serves as a qualification pathway for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Zimbabwe Cricket, on their part indicated that they would continue to monitor Ndhlovu’s recovery.
“We will continue to monitor Ndhlovu’s recovery and provide updates if necessary.”
