All-rounder creative Lady Tshawe real name Nomashawekazi Damasane has been appointed by the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) as their new Arts, Culture, and Heritage Officer.
Tshawe who has a diverse background including roles as an actress, performing artiste, musician, curator, and arts administrator within the arts sector, was appointed after the vacancy was advertised in December last year.
As we celebrate women’s month, Tshawe’s appointment is also in line with promoting and appointing women on challenging positions, which are predominantly occupied by men.
Who is Lady Tshawe?
Lady Tshawe (34) is one of the rare breeds of multi-talented artistes in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and beyond – with a rich artistic skills inventory and excellence.
She attended SOS primary school, Petra High School in Bulawayo and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Ethnomusicology at Rhodes University in South Africa.
The musician, poet, writer, dancer, actress and creative genius occupies a well-deserved and visible space in the galaxy of the local artistic stars.
She has many artistic masterpieces under her name in various circles and she has also collaborated with many other seasoned artistes including Albert Nyathi, Tariro Negitare, and Prudence Katomani-Mbofana among others.
The ‘Think About The Way’ star has also had a rare privilege of performing in many acclaimed local and international arts and cultural festivals as well as other academic, business and social events.
In 2019, she introduced herself as a playwright and a theatre director as she directed her first play 6.55 at the Bulawayo Theatre.
The play, which she wrote, tackles mental health. On its first premiere, it had an all-female cast comprising Sidumisile Mthethwa, Sithabile Ndubiwa, Nyarie S Nyika, Bonakele Agnes Ncube and Musawenkosi Sibanda.
She is part of the organisers of the esteemed Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA). She also played a role on the defunct Bulawayo Arts Awards.
