LATEST: Gvt should compensate rape victim, Supreme Court

In a landmark ruling today, the Supreme Court has granted the appeal by a rape victim Mildred Mapingure to compel government compensate her for failing to provide her with access to lawful abortion services.

Mapingure was raped in 2006. She sought contraception within three days of her rape to prevent a pregnancy.

She was claiming US$51 000 in damages. However, the High Court in December 2012 ruled in favour of the State.

But on appeal Justice Patel handed the land mark ruling today that was welcomed by women organizations and lawyers who acted for Ms Mapingure.
