Leading Zimbabwe in modern civil protection: Institute of Civil Protection

HELLO there, I hope I find you well!
This week, our focus is on the Institute of Civil Protection which is an initiative between City of Mutare and Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS).
City of Mutare Emergency Services stands at the forefront of Zimbabwe’s emergency response transformation.
With a fleet of seven state-of-the-art fire trucks, response times have dramatically improved from 24 minutes to an impressive eight minutes, as revealed by recent customer satisfaction surveys.
The establishment of a new emergency services sub-station in Dangamvura ensures broader coverage and faster response across the city.
Our Crowning Achievement: The acquisition of a multi-purpose motorised fire ladder, capable of tackling fires in high-rise buildings, aggressive infernos, and performing other special services such as public lighting maintenance enhancing both safety and urban aesthetics.
A National First: The Institute of Civil Protection
In a pioneering public-academic partnership, City of Mutare and Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) have launched Zimbabwe’s first Institute of Civil Protection.
This landmark initiative addresses the growing need for professionalising fire science, emergency response, and disaster risk management.
Addressing The Skills Flight Challenge
Local authorities across Zimbabwe have long grappled with the exodus of skilled fire-fighters to higher paying jobs abroad.
The Institute of Civil Protection is our strategic response to reverse this trend:
Grow Local Talent: Training new recruits ready to serve municipalities, government agencies, and private industry.
Upskilling Existing Staff: Offering advanced training modules for current employees across all local authorities
National Benefits
The Institute of Civil Protection is poised to have a significant impact on the country, with benefits such as:
Retaining talent and reducing brain drain
Capacity building and strengthening national and municipal fire-fighting and disaster response capacity
Enhanced public safety through professional responses
Regional collaboration and standardized training
A Model for the Future
The City of Mutare’s modernised emergency services and the Institute of Civil Protection serve as a model for the future of civil protection in Zimbabwe.
By investing in infrastructure, training, and partnerships, the city has set a new standard for emergency response and disaster management, paving the way for a safer and more resilient nation.
The Institute of Civil Protection is not just a Mutare initiative but a national model for the future of civil protection in Zimbabwe.
