A FORM four learner at Nyakatsapa High in Mutasa District has been expelled from school for allegedly urinating in a bottle while seated in class.
The learner, a boarder whose name has been withheld, will now have to sit for his end-of-year ZIMSEC final exams as a private candidate next term.
In an interview, the student’s father expressed outrage over the school’s decision, claiming that his son had asked to leave the classroom to relieve himself, but was denied permission by the teacher.
“I think the school authorities were heavy-handed in their decision to expel my son. What hurts me the most is that my child is in Form 4, and has been told that he can only return to school to write the final ZIMSEC exams next term,” he said.
The father, who could not be named to protect the identity of the minor, argued that the school could have handled the matter more constructively, given the student’s impending exams.
“The boy is Form 4, and even if he had shown disciplinary problems, I think there could have been a diplomatic and constructive way of dealing with someone who will be sitting for exams in October, just three months from now,” he said.
When contacted for confirmation, the school headmaster, Mr Misheck Rwizi said the matter had been dealt with by his deputy.
“The parent actually came and discussed the matter with the deputy headmaster. I heard about it. Yes, that issue of urinating in a bottle in the class was mentioned,” he said.
Mr Rwizi added that the student had been involved in other disciplinary issues, but the incident of urinating in the bottle while in class was the most prominent.
