Legendary actor Ernest Ndlovu speaks on Empini role

Renowned Zimbabwean actor Ernest Ndlovu, whose career spans over four decades in film and television, has opened up about what drew him to the Showmax telenovela, Empini.

Best known for his roles as Vukani Khoza, father to Zamani and Ajax, in the SABC1 soapie Generations, as Ngwebedla on Isibaya, Qhamuka on Gomora and King Jama in Shaka iLembe – the most awarded drama series in Saftas history – the South Africa-based actor remains deeply passionate about storytelling.

Reflecting on his journey in the entertainment industry, the 71-year-old Ndlovu acknowledged how significantly the industry has transformed since he first started.

“When I began, there were barely any black filmmakers or production houses. Seeing black creatives now leading the industry, producing high-quality content and telling our own stories is truly inspiring.”

He expressed pride in how far the industry has come.

“We’re no longer just actors. We’re directors, producers and decision-makers. “The fact that audiences are now enjoying stories crafted by black storytellers, reflecting our history and reality, brings me immense joy.”

Ndlovu also spoke about his long-standing connection with veteran actor Owen Sejake best known for his roles in the television drama series Yizo Yizo, Ke Nake, and Soul City, highlighting their shared passion for politically charged storytelling.

“I’ve known Owen for a long time. While his career was deeply rooted in theatre, mine was mostly in television. What I appreciate about our journeys is that we both worked on projects reflecting South Africa’s political climate—his through protest theatre and mine through TV productions.”

Their combined experience made stepping into their Empini characters effortless.
“We both understood the complexities of portraying political figures who, on the surface, seem to have noble intentions but are deeply flawed. Working alongside Owen was not only an honour but also a learning experience.”

Born in Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe, Ndlovu has featured in numerous South African television series, including Egoli, African Skies, Going Up, Tarzan: The Epic Adventures, Justice for All, Home Affairs, Sokhulu and Partners, Angel, Okavango, Rhodes, Soul City, Madam & Eve, Charlie Jade, Izingane zo Baba and Crusoe.

With an impressive career behind him and an unwavering passion for storytelling, Ndlovu continues to leave a lasting impact on African cinema and television.—SNL24/Showbiz Reporter
