ZRP officers on a peacekeeping mission in Liberia are safe from the deadly Ebola virus and the United Nations is ready to handle any situation that might arise, Police Deputy Commissioner General (human resources), Levie Sibanda has said.
In an interview after the de-briefing of 39 ZRP officers who had been on United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, Dep Comm Gen Sibanda, said the force had not received any reports of officers affected by the disease.
“Police officers on duty in Liberia are safe from Ebola and there have never been any reports concerning our officers. Once our police officers are on duty outside the country, they will be in the hands of the UN and the organisation is so much prepared to handle the situation,” he said.
Earlier on in a speech read on his behalf by Dep Comm-Gen Sibanda, Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri, commended the officers for executing their duties with diligence during their peace keeping mission and for maintaining a fair share of recognition in the international peacekeeping operation.
Comm Gen Chihuri said international peacekeeping duties brought together various countries and it was pleasing that Zimbabwe continued to singled out as an outstanding performers. He said the officers managed to carry out their duties in line with the UN mandate during their mission despite the many challenges experienced.
“This is testified by the high level posts which the officers were honoured with as a result of their professionalism,” he said.
“We have no doubt that your work has contributed to the peace of that country,” he said.
Comm-Gen Chihuri also urged the people of Zimbabwe to maintain the peace that prevailed in the country and to keep the goodwill that existed between the citizens alive.
