ZIMBABWE is turning to trusted leadership as it gears up to host one of its most significant sporting events in recent years.

Veteran coach and sports scientist Phakamile Lisimati has been appointed to lead the national team at the upcoming Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled for  26 to 27 July in Harare.

As chair of SADC and host of the biennial competition, Zimbabwe is expected to go beyond just chasing medals, it’s also showcasing its organisational capability and regional solidarity. And for that, the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) is banking on Lisimati’s deep experience on the world stage.

He has previously represented Zimbabwe at the World Championships, the Olympic Games and various continental events. Naaz believes his strategic insight and steady leadership will be critical as Zimbabwe aims for two victories: one as the best host and another at the top of the athletics medals table.

The national team is yet to be announced, but most of the squad will likely be drawn from athletes, who competed at the Inter-Provincial Championships held in Harare last month.

“We carry more than medals. We carry the unity of SADC nations. We carry Zimbabwe’s honour as SADC Chair. But above all, we carry belief,” said Lisimati, in whom Naaz has once again placed its confidence.

Lisimati’s most recent assignment was leading the Zimbabwean contingent at the Botswana national finals.

This year’s edition of the Southern Region Senior Athletics Championships is particularly symbolic for Zimbabwe. As both host and SADC Chair, the event provides a unique opportunity to champion youth development, regional pride and sporting excellence.

Lisimati has worked with several of Zimbabwe’s top athletes, including Thandiwa Nyathi, Dumi Bhebhe, Clinton Muunga, Nontokozo Ncube, Prissy Mpofu and Awakhiwe Ndlovu.

Milestones:

2019 — Led Zimbabwe’s relay team to their first World Relays in Yokohama, Japan

2021 — Delivered Zimbabwe’s first medal in over 20 years at the African Senior Championships (Bronze — 4x400m Relay, Mauritius)

2025 — Heads the team of 80 athletes and eight coaches for the Southern Region Championships
