In a heartfelt appeal to the nation’s youth, renowned creative and philanthropist Mthulisi Ndlovu, better known as KingKG or KhuluGatsheni, has urged young people to resist the growing tide of drug abuse and instead embrace a future filled with hope and possibility.
KingKG expressed deep concern over the escalating addiction crisis gripping the country.
“Drug abuse is a growing epidemic that is robbing our youth of their potential and their futures. But it’s essential for every young person to know that they are stronger than this challenge,” said KingKG.
“They can say no to drugs and to chart a different course for their lives. The fight is difficult, but it’s one they must not lose.”
Recent statistics paint a grim picture of the drug abuse situation in Zimbabwe. A 2022 survey by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) revealed that 24,6% of Zimbabweans aged 15-64 have used drugs at least once in their lifetime. The same survey found that 12m1% of respondents reported using drugs in the past year, with cannabis being the most commonly used substance (8,4%).
A 2023 report by the Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN) noted a significant increase in drug-related arrests among youths, with 45% of those arrested being under the age of 25.
KingKG said that combating drug abuse requires a collective effort.
“It takes a village to raise a child. This age-old adage underscores the importance of community involvement in guiding and supporting our youth. By coming together, we can offer the encouragement, resources, and role models that are crucial for helping young people make positive choices,” he said.
“Ubuntu is about the belief in a universal bond that connects all humanity. By embracing Ubuntu, different communities can work together to create supportive environments for our youth, sharing resources, and fostering a sense of belonging and mutual care.”
KingKG’s message resonates as a powerful call to action, urging young people to reject drug abuse and embrace the possibilities of a brighter, drug-free future. His emphasis on collective responsibility and community solidarity provides a hopeful path forward in addressing the crisis and supporting the next generation. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
