Local dance group relishes Turkey tour

Blessing Gondokondo Entertainment Reporter —
LAST year’s Jikinya Dance Festival winners, St Peter’s Tokoyo Primary School Traditional Dance of Nyazura has returned from a successful tour of Turkey where they were invited to perform.

St Peter’s Tokoyo Primary School Cultural Dance Group was invited to perform at the annual Zimbabwe National Day in Antalya. They performed cultural dances to Zimbabweans based in Turkey.

The group choreographer and producer, Taurai Moyo, said the tour was an eye-opener.

“It was a wonderful experience to the group. We were the only group which was invited to provide entertainment. We performed at the Zimbabwe National Day in Antalya. The audience responded well to our performances. People in Turkey appreciated our dances,” said Moyo.

The group travelled to Turkey with representatives from National Arts of Zimbabwe, Ministry of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of Culture Heritage and the Ministry of Agriculture.

With this great experience, Moyo urged young people to take traditional dance seriously as it offers many opportunities in life.

“I have had the opportunity to travel far and wide through traditional dance and I am making a living through it.

“Traditional dancing opened new doors for me and I have realised that it is high time that I help young children to also experience what I have experienced with traditional dancing,” he said.
