BULAWAYO model Bokani Nleya is set to star in a local film production titled Qiniso scripted and directed by Lenni Mdawini Sibanda of Ya-Sibo Media, which will be her debut role on screen. The film will also feature songstress Mbo Mahocs, socialite Gilmore T, who have also had cameo roles in various productions as well as hip hop artiste Thorne of K.L.A.P. and Leroy M Ndlovu who starred in Moonlight Cross.
Produced by Thubelihle Moyo, with cinematographic work done by renowned videographer Vusa Blaqs Hlatshwayo, the film reflects on the effects of the death of a prominent person in society. Nleya plays the role of Gwen Jamela Sibanda, a feisty journalist who is fighting her way up a male dominated corporate ladder, and she is the main narrator in a story of how a powerful man’s death affects people around him.
“When I went for auditions, I was just looking for a way to do something new – I have never really thought about acting before. So I then got called back and I am grateful for the opportunity. Ever since I started arts, I have seen commendable growth in my confidence and now I am able to express myself in ways I never did before,” said the first princess in the Miss Nust 2013 pageant.
Added Nleya: “I am also doing this to encourage others to see that they can be what they want to be and they should set their minds on it and go for it.”
Lenni Mdawini Sibanda, who is the brains behind the film, said production was set for June with the film expected to be premiered in August.
“We have shot a promo for the film and we will be starting to shoot in June in Bulawayo. The crew and cast are all from the City of Kings. We are also working with some local musicians on the music side and there should be some scores from the film released sometime this month,” he noted.
Sibanda grew up in Pumula and rose to considerable influence in the film-making industry with one of his films having been shown in Germany earlier this year.
