THE former head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Rhodesia, Professor Michael Gelfand, is to be conferred with two honorary degrees.
Prof Gelfand will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws (LL. D) of the University of Rhodesia in May. In June he will receive the degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) from the University of Cape Town.
The awards are in honour of Prof Gelfand’s contributions to literature, history and medicine.
Prof Gelfand retired as professor of medicine and head of the Faculty of Medicine at the end of last year, but continues as a research fellow in the department.
He is the author of more than 30 books on the history of medicine in the three former territories of Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, African diseases and the culture of the Shona people.
He said yesterday he was delighted and felt “highly honoured to receive these awards.”
Among his publications is The Sick African, a clinical study published in 1943.
