HOME Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe has directed the Lotteries and Gaming Board (LGB) to provide resources to revamp the Chimoio Memorial Shrine in Mozambique.
This directive came after the minister’s visit to the site on Wednesday to assess its condition and determine what improvements are needed.
“We see a lot of challenges here, such as access to potable water and modern facilities for the caretakers, among other things,” Minister Kazembe said. “There is a lot that needs to be done, which is why we appealed to the Lotteries and Gaming Board to assist the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe with resources to upgrade these facilities. We are making this intervention because we realise the urgency of the situation.”
In response, LGB’s vice chair, Mr Costain Sabau, affirmed the board’s readiness to provide the necessary resources.
“We plan to spruce up these facilities before the ZANU PF Annual National People’s Conference in October 2025. I want to assure the minister that we will fulfil the task he gave us to make the upgrades. The resources will be availed.”
The planned upgrades include fencing the area, constructing new toilets and a resting shelter for visitors and installing a new solar system to power the borehole.
The Chimoio Memorial Shrine stands as a powerful testament to the immense sacrifice of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. It is the hallowed ground where over 3 000 lives were tragically lost in a brutal raid by Rhodesian Security Forces on the ZANLA camp on November 23, 1977.
This devastating massacre marks the largest loss of life in a single event during the entire war for independence, forever cementing Chimoio’s place as a site of profound historical significance and remembrance.
Officials noted that the number of visitors to the shrine has been increasing recently.
