Love from the grave

IF the Romeo and Juliet love story involved ghosts, then this would be a modern day equivalent of the Shakespeare play.

A Zimunya family is reportedly facing the wrath of an avenging spirit of their daughter’s extra-marital lover who committed suicide over her lost love in June last year.

Elijah Ngwarati committed suicide after being confronted by his lover, Veronica Mutyamaenza’s husband, Takesure Matika.

He was ordered to break up with Mutyamaenza.

After the confrontation, Mutyamaenza also told him that she was no longer interested in the illicit relationship, thereby shattering Ngwarati’s heart.

Ngwarati and Mutyamaenza had been having an affair for six years.

It is alleged that Mutyamaenza, who together with her husband runs Matika Shops at Gutaurare Business Centre in Zimunya, would shower Ngwarati with gifts before word of the affair reached Matika.

When the two families appeared before Acting Chief Zimunya’s court recently, the late Ngwarati’s spirit manifested on his brother, Joseph Ngwarati, as soon as he set eyes on Mutyamaenza.

With eyes wide open, Joseph crawled towards Mutyamaenza.

He had to be restrained before attacking her.

Despite the day being very cold, with everyone donning warm clothing, Joseph was sweating profusely, leaving his clothes and the floor wet.

“I killed myself because of this woman, not because I wanted to, but because she, her husband and two other people (identified) visited a Chipinge traditional healer to acquire juju for me to take my life.

“She did not want me to divulge to her husband the minute details of our relationship. Instead, she made me commit suicide.

“In June last year, her husband confronted me about the affair, but I denied any knowledge of this since I was so much in love with her.

“After that he confronted her about the matter and when I met with her at our usual spot, she denied that she had told him about the relationship. Instead, she ordered me not to tell Matika anything.

“She then ended our relationship and I could not take it lightly. It was a bitter pill for me to swallow because I loved her with all my heart,” said Ngwarati.

Ngwarati’s other brother, Samson Ngwarati, said he suspects that Matika, Mutyamaenza and their friends murdered his brother before hanging him to stage manage a suicide.

However, Mutyamaenza rubbished these claims.

She denied having an affair with Ngwarati for six years, saying that they were in an extra-marital relationship for four years only.

“He is lying, we were never in love for six years. It was only four years. I still have the phone that he bought for me. I beg his family to take it back because once we are done appeasing his spirit, I want to be done with him.

“We were in love, but I never teamed up with my husband and other men to get juju in Chipinge to kill him. He killed himself as he could not accept that it was over between us,” she said.

The Mutyamaenza family was asked to pay seven herd of cattle to the Ngwarati family to appease Elijah’s spirit.

Acting Chief Zimunya said the cattle must be handed over to the Ngwaratis on July 31, with cleansing rituals conducted at the Ngwarati homestead in Gutaurare Village.

Mutyamaenza has since been sent packing by her husband.
