LUCK ran out for a Makoni thief, barely 800 metres from where he had stolen a fellow villager’s bicycle, and he will now perform community service for his crime.
Aldof Muchenje, 32, of Village 38, in Mayo, was not represented when he appeared before Rusape magistrate Daphene Maruta, who convicted him of theft.
Maruta sentenced him to seven months imprisonment and suspended three months on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining four months were set aside on condition that Muchenje performs 140 hours of community service at ZRP Inyati Mine Police Station.
Prosecutor Innocent Moyowaonda told the court that Muchenje was spotted pushing Job Mugadza’s bicycle away from where he had parked it.
Mugadza effected a citizen arrest and handed Muchenje to ZRP Mayo, which is a few metres from the crime scene.
“On July 31 2025 and at around 2pm, Mugadza parked his bicycle at Mayo Business Centre near Nona Bottle Store. The complainant left the bicycle and then went to Musariri General Dealer.
“He went back after about ten minutes and did not locate his bicycle.
“Mugadza then searched around the area and found Muchenje pushing his bicycle about 800 metres from the shops near the ZINWA pump.
“Mugadza then escorted the accused person to ZRP Mayo. The value of the stolen bicycle is US$100 and was recovered,” Moyowaonda told the court.
