Luveve to host volleyball fest

The tournament will run over two days starting tomorrow for the primary schools and Saturday for the secondary schools.
“We are also hoping to combine the festival with the official opening of the Volleyball Academy. The tournament will be for the Under-13 tomorrow and Under-16 and Under-20 on Saturday,” said William Mazviro, the academy’s organising secretary.

He said they had invited a number of schools from Bulawayo and the southern parts of the country.
“We also invited schools from Harare but we are still to get confirmation from them. We are also expecting schools from Midlands, Matabeleland South and Matabeleland North,” said Mazviro.

Some of the schools that were invited for the tournament include Regina Mundi, St James, George Silundika, Matopo, Mzingwane, Mtshabezi, Usher and Thekwane High schools.
Bulawayo teams that are expected to take part include Milton, Mpopoma, Sikhulile, Emakhandeni and Luveve.

In the primary schools category, Sacred Heart, Mtshingwe, Mafakela, Usher and an unnamed club from Pumula suburb are expected to compete.
“We are trying to rebuild the sport and raise the standards. We have not been performing well against teams from other provinces in the past couple of years and we want that to change,” said Mazviro.

He said they were not only doing this for the benefit of sport but they were also on a drive to educate children about HIV/Aids.
“Our aim is to have volleyball being played throughout the year. We will be holding tournaments every term. However the tournaments are also meant to help children learn how to sustain themselves in the community,” he said.

The volleyball academy was opened in July and is meant to cater mainly for players from and around Luveve suburb.
Mazviro said they were expecting a number of top sports administrators to be present at the launch.
