Mabvuku Primary win Herentals Athletics Gala

Athletics Gala at the National Sports Stadium’s B Arena on Monday.
The competition featured the college’s schools from Mabvuku and Chitungwiza and it catered for three age-groups – 4-6 years, 7-8 years and the Under-14.
Participants took part in the 75m, 800m, 100m and 200m track events and Mabvuku scored a total of 303 points to win the competition as they dominated in most of these events.
Herentials group of colleges sports director, Stewart Rupawa, said the event was a success.
“We had 700 athletes taking part and the competition was high regardless that we had children as little as four years in the event.
“The level of competition was good and for primary schools level, it shows that we have some good athletes in Zimbabwe,” said Rupawa.
Rupawa said there is need for all stakeholders in sports to come on board and support the young athletes.
“What they need is exposure. We need support from the parents, teachers and the community at large to motivate these kids.
“We need to work as schools with other stakeholders to develop sport in the country,” said Rupawa.
He also said they will be holding another competition today at the University of Zimbabwe for the secondary schools.
“Tomorrow (today) we will have another competition for the secondary schools. We have 11 centres and each school is expected to bring in 160 athletes,” said Rupawa.
Participants will take part in the 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m, 4x100m and 4x400m events while in the field events athletes will battle it out in long jump, shotput, high jump, discus and triple jump.
Schools that are expected to compete in today’s competition include those from the college’s centres in Mutare, Bulawayo, Gweru (CBD), Gweru (Mkoba), Kuwadzana, Highfield, Mabvuku, and Harare (CBD).
Mabvuku are the defending champions and will be out to retain their title.
