Macheso croons in Binga as Dr Tawanda invades Harare

THE sleepy and entertainment starved people of Binga will next Saturday get a rare treat from the king of sungura, Alick Macheso, when he visits the place for the first time ever.

Macheso will play at the DDF Shipping Services at Binga Centre in a first since the sungura artiste began his career back in the 1980s.

The previous day, the “Tafadzwa Nyarara” singer would have made a stop at Chinotimba Stadium in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

The two shows, which coincide with the local celebrations of the World Red Cross Day, were organised by the local chapter of the Global Red Cross Movement, Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and Macheso.

Baba Sharo as Macheso is fondly referred to by his legion of fans, said music lovers are in for a “special treat”.

“We last performed in Victoria Falls in October 2013 and we are happy to make a memorable return to the resort town. The Binga show is our first ever in the border district and we call on all music lovers to converge at the DDF Shipping Services for a special treat,” said Macheso.

Zimbabwe Red Cross Society Secretary General Maxwell Phiri, said fans should come and have fun as is always the case when Macheso performs.

“We know fans love to watch Macheso perform especially in areas starved of entertainment but these two shows are unique in that we are fundraising to ensure no one goes without food in Zimbabwe and we hope we will realise enough funds to augment what the international community is giving to us.

“Fans must, therefore, come and dance the night away at the same time bearing in mind that their dollar will help put a smile on the face of a less privileged citizen,” said Phiri.

Macheso is the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society Humanitarian Ambassador.

Dr Tawanda invades Harare

In Harare, revellers are today spoilt of choice as the capital explodes with all sorts of attractions. Either they will attend the last day of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) or they will grace intriguing family shows dotted around town.

Various social events have been lined up for today, but attention will be on the battle between two joints, Jongwe Corner and Zebra Village that are a spitting distance apart.

At Jongwe Corner, Botswana-based producer-cum-musician Tawanda Kasaira aka Dr Tawanda, will be sharing the stage with dendera crooner Suluman “Sulu” Chimbetu.

The “Unconquerable” hit-maker, Dr Tawanda, who jetted into the country last week, is expected to steal the show. The entertainer commands a huge following in Botswana and is out to prove a point to locals that know little about his artistry.

His track, “Unconquerable” has become an anthem in the country. Unfortunately very few people in Zimbabwe can easily put face to a song that they are dancing to every week.

Add to that, he is currently working on a collaboration song, “Hosana”, with Sulu which is now set for release. The track was well received when it was played during the Independence Celebration gig that was held in Botswana last month.

Sulu’s publicist Joe “Local” Nyamungoma said their combination with the Botswana-based producer-cum-promoter was proving to be formidable.

“We are reciprocating the good gesture Dr Tawanda showed us during our Botswana visit.

Plans for us to periodically perform together both inside and outside the country have already been set in motion. In short, I can say we now have healthy working relationship,” he said.

Zhakata on the rise

With other top attractions in the mould of Alick Macheso and Jah Prayzah out of town, the combination of Zora Music founder Leonard Zhakata and controversial gospel musician Matthias Mhere poses the biggest threat to the Jongwe Corner gig.

Mhere is currently attracting bumper crowds wherever he performs around the country. Zebra Village proprietor Sydney Dube believes his selected combination can withstand any form of competition.

“Zhakata and Mhere are good at what they do. With this line-up I think I will not regret. It is combination that you can trust on any given day never mind the circumstances,” he said.

Jah Prayzah in Young Igwe’s backyard

Jah Prayzah and his maverick Third Generation Band invade Kwekwe Stadium today. As usual the group is expected to deliver a polished act.

The group’s previous hunts in the Midlands town have been good and they expect the same today. Tides will certainly favour Jah Prayzah’s group considering that they are a considerable distance from the madding crowd of the capital.
