SUNGURA maestro, Alick Macheso, is making a big difference in the life of a Chinhoyi-based sungura artist, Gibson Kanyanda, whom he has inspired to venture into the music industry.
The 35-year-old H-Metro that Macheso is his role model.
He is also known as Zhampapaya Bass Cracker.
He formed his band, The Cheater Kings, in 2001.
Kanyanda paid tribute to Macheso for inspiring him to be the artist that he has become.
“Macheso is my role model who has influenced my life. His songs are pregnant with social issues that affect the community.
“He is a good role model worth looking up to,” he said.
His dream is to share the stage with Macheso.Kanyanda released his first album, ‘Shamu Yemapenzi,’ a year later. The album contains tracks such as ‘Zhampapaya’, ‘Naume’, ‘Mazano’ and ‘Vimbika.’
“On this album, I collaborated with Kezias Chikandiwa.
“This year I have done it again.
“I have released a new album titled ‘Pidigori Kuumburuka’,” said Kanyanda.
He said the album has some rich sungura songs such as ‘Tariro’, ‘Zinoirema’, ‘Nherera’, ‘Mukadzi Ane Rudo’, and ‘Chingaveyi’.
“I once shared the stage with the late Paul Mpofu’s sons and also the Ngosimbi Crew.
“I was a backing vocalist and the group was fronted by Admire Kasenga,” said Kanyanda.
Kanyanda feels it’s now the time to make a mark in the music industry.
“I believe like wine I have now matured,” said Kanyanda.
He bemoaned the lack of support and recognition from music promoters who shun artists from small towns.
Kanyanda is married and blessed with two sons, Ocain and Ominpresence.
