Macheso, Peter Dhewa to stage show at Amphitheatre

The Tafadzwa hit-maker is expected to have two other shows in Gweru and Kwekwe tomorrow and Sunday respectively.

In an interview, one of the organisers of the show, Tafadzwa Maridadi said the Kwekwe show, to be held at Mbizo Stadium, will be in memory of the late singer, Tongai Moyo. In the midlands capital, Cheso will be at the Midlands hotel.

In Kwekwe, Extra Basso is expected to share the stage with Tongai’s progeny, Peter, popularly known as Young Igwe.

Peter, who was thrown into the deep end after the death of his father a year ago seems to be finding his feet and has weathered the storm of band member desertions, among other challenges.

He will be out to prove himself on home turf that he is the rightful heir to the Dehwa legacy, a day shy of the first anniversary of his father’s death. Tongai died on 15 October.

In Bulawayo, Maridadi said, Macheso will share the stage with Progress Chipfumo. Macheso has over the years brought Chipfumo to Bulawayo and in recent times, has also roped in the late Naison “Dr Nero” Chimbetu’s son Tryson, as part of his curtain raisers.

This development, together with the departure of Elton Muropa, Noel Nyazanda and Francis Dhaka, popularly known as “Franco Slomo”, to Orchestra Dendera Kings, led to what some have coined a rivalry between the fiery bassist and Sulumani Chimbetu. Sulu and Tryson had a tiff over the usage of their late fathers’ works.

However, Bulawayo fans will, for the first time since their departure, see Muropa and Nyazanda back in action at Orchestra Mberikwazvo, after they were missing in the line-up, when Macheso was in Bulawayo in September.

During their absence Donald Gogo and a Devin took turns to play the lead guitar.

The departure of these two also halted the recording of Macheso’s yet to be titled album, which was scheduled for release in August.

Maridadi said Macheso began playing some of the songs from the album two weeks ago, at a show held at Mega One in Harare.

“He will play some of the numbers from the album at these shows to gauge the market’s response,” he said.

The release of this album will bring Macheso’s discography to nine.
To date he has released Magariro, Vakiridzo, Zvakanaka Zvakadaro, Simbaradzo, Zvido Zvenyu Kunyanya, Ndezva She! Vapupuri Pupurai and his last project Tafadzwa.

The albums have chart-busting songs like Charakupa, Shediah, Madhawu, Tafadzwa, Chara Chimwe, Amai Varubhi, Mundikumbuke and Petunia, which Macheso is expected to belt out at the Amphitheatre.
