A Silobela man has been sentenced to 12 months behind bars for striking a rival with machete in the head. Tawanda Mpofu (31) of Village 16 Chief Ntabeni in Silobela was convicted of assault after he appeared before Kwekwe magistrate Mr Lavroe Philemon.

Mpofu will however, serve an effective 9 months after Mr Rushambwa suspended 3 months for 5 years on condition of good behaviour. Mpofu’s accomplice, Vusimuzi Moyo, is still at large. The State led by Mr Freddy Ndoro proved that on June 13, at Parker Business Centre, Moyo was carrying a machete and threatening to use it on anyone who dared to touch his opaque beer.

Deyisi, the court heard, approached Moyo and warned him against carrying dangerous weapons in public. This however did not go down well with Moyo who was drinking in the company of the accused. Mpofu, the court heard, suddenly stood up and struck Deyisi with a machete once in the head and he fell unconscious.

Moyo produced an okapi knife and stabbed Deyisi once on the left thigh. The two then fled the scene leaving Deyisi bleeding profusely.

He was ferried to Loreto Hospital where he was treated and discharged. Mpofu was arrested and arraigned before the courts and was convicted.
