ZIMBABWE walked tall at the SADC Regional Media Awards after three of its own scooped top gongs in Antananarivo yesterday.
Zimpapers’ power duo Kudakwashe Hunda and Veronica Gwaze bagged first prizes in the photography and print categories, while rising student Danai Kwedza clinched second place in the tertiary essay contest.
Gwaze could hardly hide her excitement.

“I’m elated to make it to such a big stage. This award is proof that my works are being recognised. I’m overjoyed to have lifted both the Zimpapers brand and the national flag of Zimbabwe, capping President Mnangagwa’s SADC chairmanship in style,” she said.
She thanked her editors and mentors for holding her hand since day one.
“This is for Zimpapers and for Zimbabwe,” she declared.
Hunda, who defended his crown after winning the same award last year, said it was all about raising the country’s colours.
It was an honour being SADC’s official photographer during President Mnangagwa’s chairmanship. Zimbabwe hosted a successful SADC Industrialisation Week, which became my entry, and I’m glad we kept a clean record in photography,” he said.
He saluted Government officials and Zimpapers bosses for their backing.
The trio’s big night confirmed what many in the region are now realising — Zimbabwean media talent is punching above its weight.
